A Univariate Inequality for Medians

چکیده

There has been a great deal of recent emphasis on majorization and related correlation inequalities, for example Marshall and Olkin [11' and Karlin and Rinott [2]. These inequalities have a variety of important applications. However they are based solely on mathematical expectations, for example the result below due to Karamata [3]. After stating this result we give our analog for medians. Karamata's result (THEOREM): Let F and G be distributionfunctions, on (c, d). Let p. = F-G. Then f 4dp a Ofor all convexfunctions, :(c,d)-*R, if and only if

The Best Constant in a Geometric Inequality Relating Medians, Inradius and Circumradius in a Triangle

In this paper, the authors give a refinement of the inequality associated with the medians, inradius and circumradius in a triangle by making use of certain analytical techniques for systems of nonlinear algebraic equations.

Projection - Based Depth Functions and Associated Medians

A class of projection-based depth functions is introduced and studied. These projection-based depth functions possess desirable properties of statistical depth functions and their sample versions possess strong and order √ n uniform consistency. Depth regions and contours induced from projection-based depth functions are investigated. Structural properties of depth regions and contours and gene...

Multivariate medians and measure-symmetrization

Geometric and stochastic ideas interact in a wide variety of ways over both theory and applications. For two connections that do not seem to have been mentioned before, we present here descriptive comments and suggestions for further investigation. The first deals with multivariate medians, an active area of research in which Yehuda himself was interested (see [11] with Cun-Hui Zhang). Using th...

Do Extreme Values of Daily-Life Gait Characteristics Provide More Information About Fall Risk Than Median Values?

BACKGROUND Gait characteristics estimated from daily-life trunk accelerations reflect gait quality and are associated with fall incidence in older adults. While associations are based on median values of these gait characteristics, their extreme values may reflect either high-risk situations or steady-state gait and may thus be more informative in relation to fall risk. OBJECTIVE The objectiv...
